One long term solution for individuals with missing teeth are dental implants. A dental implant is a small post in which is placed where the missing tooth is located and acts as an artificial replacement for the root portion of a missing tooth.
Dental Implants may be used for a multitude of reasons and have the capacity to support single and multiple teeth via a bridge, or to secure loose dentures firmly in place. Dental implants also offer great benefits to your oral health as they help preserve your facial structure, preventing bone deterioration and muscle sagging which can be commonly found in individuals who have missing teeth. Dental Implants help support a healthy, strong foundation for replacement teeth that look, feel, and function like your own teeth.
If you have missing teeth dental implants offer the perfect long-term solution to replace them. A dental implant is a small titanium post which functions as an artificial replacement for the root portion of a missing tooth. When surgically implanted into the jaw, dental implants "fuse" with bone tissue in your jaw, providing a strong support for an artificial tooth or teeth.
Dental Implants can be used to support a single crown, multiple teeth via a bridge or to secure loose dentures firmly in place. In addition to the obvious replacement of lost teeth, dental implants can also help to preserve your facial structure, preventing bone deterioration and muscle sagging which occurs when teeth are missing. Dental implants provide a foundation for the replacement teeth that look, feel and function just like your own natural teeth.
The most common indications for implant therapy are:
• Replacement of one or more missing teeth.
• Support of a non-removable "bridge" to replace multiple teeth.
• Support of a removable full or partial denture
• Patients who successfully pass a screening and evaluation can be considered as candidates for implant replacement.
The prime controlling factor inherent in implant therapy is the amount of bone available to receive and support the implant. If a dentist determines that a patient does not inhibit enough bone needed to support an implant restoration, procedures known as bone grafting will occur. Keep in mind that those who smoke or have other medical condition may not be eligible for the use of implant therapy.
In order to determine the most effective area for the implant replacement, you will undergo a multitude of tests such as x-rays and CT scans. Then, Impressions are taken of your mouth and used by a dental lab to create a customized restoration. Many dentists fabricate surgical guide to simplify the placement of implants.
After you have undergone a series of tests at your first appointment, your second appointment consists of the dentist making and incision to expose the bone at the implant site. Shortly after the first incision is made, the dentist prepares the sire to receive the implant. After the implant has been secured, the gum tissue is placed back over the implant.
Once the implant is made and secured into its’ allotted space, dentists allow three to six months to pass in order for it to osseointegrate with the bone. If the implant is indeed visible in the mouth, the patient has the option to wear a temporary prosthesis until it is fully healed. Along with a prosthesis, one’s dentures may be relined with soft liners to allow patients to wear them comfortably during the healing process.
After the implant fully integrates itself with the bone, a post is attached to the implant. The dentist is then able to create the permanent tooth replacement.
